The Vancouver Island Chapter of The Piano Technicians Guild is super pleased to present Jim Busby in an all day seminar. Jim Busby, RPT lives in Mt. Pleasant, Utah and has worked as a piano technician for over 40 years including 13 years at Brigham Young University as a concert technician. Jim’s experience has made him a much sought after instructor at Piano Technicians Guild conventions, Master Piano Technician conventions, regional PTG conferences, and local meetings. Jim is also the developer of the Piano Technician Tutorials and eBooks. He recently premiered a 3-day voicing class at the PTG Home Office.

Location: Room 107 in the Music Building at the Nanaimo campus of Vancouver Island University. Check further below for travel information in beautiful Nanaimo! Unlike most things these days, there’s a free lunch and, for out-of-towners we can arrange pick up and drop off at the Nanaimo area ferry terminals or airport.

Schedule: The plan is to get started at 9 A.M. and wrap it up around 5 P.M

Cost: $60.00 PTG or CAPT members, $100.00 for non-members.

Jim covers a lot of ground in his seminar that’s peppered with anecdotes and tips about what really matters in doing piano work and, how to get it done quickly. We’ll also get a chance to rummage through his toolkit a bit and ask the question, “What’s that for”? Before lunch Jim will cover things like vertical regulation, tools and tips, tone building, what really matters in grand regulation and, how to get faster at it.

We promise a FREE and very tasty lunch with some informal time to kick ideas around and go through Jim’s tool kit.

The afternoon session will feature truly time saving tools, jigs and tricks with a particular focus on grand dampers which Jim has spent some 30 years thinking about. Jim will conclude the day with thoughts about the business and how to turbo charge service calls. If time permits he will field questions. To get a taste of his presentation check this Instructional Video which is part of a series made by Jim. Sounds like a very full day so plan to join us, it will be well worth it.

Travel to Nanaimo:

Vancouver Island University is well signed in Nanaimo, Campus map link (pdf). The Music Building is #320, enter off Fifth Street and aim for parking lots ‘E’, ‘F’, or ‘G’.

Coming from Vancouver there are ferry connections, the best leaves Horseshoe Bay at 6:30 getting into Departure Bay, Nanaimo at 8:15. If you are a foot passenger we will arrange to have you picked up at the terminal and we’ll get you back there at the end of the day. We can also arrange pick up for the Duke Point Terminal but the ferry timing there is awkward at best.

So come join us for a full day seminar from renowned technician Jim Busby!
